A knight defending against a pawn can allow promotion and then fork the new queen and the king. Checking for forking squares is part of every knight-versus-pawn calculation.
White cannot stop the a-pawn from promoting; the knight on d4 does not control a1. But it does control b3, and b3 is a knight's move from both a1 and c1. That is all White needs.
