Connected pawns stopped on the fifth rank are held when the defender's king blocks one advance square and the bishop controls the other. The king must stand on a square the attacking bishop cannot reach.
Two connected pawns on the fifth rank with opposite-coloured bishops are the textbook borderline case. The attacker wins if they can reach the sixth rank with protection; the defender holds if king and bishop between them control both advance squares and cannot be dislodged.
