Two connected pawns supported by the king are held when the defending king stands in front of them and the knight attacks from the side or behind, picking off any pawn that advances without support.
Against two connected pawns the knight needs its king nearby; alone it would lose (next drill). Here White's king on f1 is in front of the f-pawn, and the knight on b1 comes around to attack the pawns from behind.
