When all pawns are blocked, the kings fight over a system of corresponding squares; the side that must move onto its square first loses the zugzwang.
The most famous corresponding-squares position, composed by Emanuel Lasker and Gustavus Reichhelm (1901). No pawn can move. White's king wants either b5 (winning a5) or g5 (winning f5), and Black's king must prevent both.
